Hi Mark! Congrats on taking the plunge and deciding to go for the 500 this year!! For Hoodoo I was using a compact with an 11-32, but earlier this year I went even bigger and got an 11-34 for RAAM. Having the easier gears to spin up hill when you're tired is a godsend! Plus spinning at a higher cadence rather than grinding out a low cadence is much more efficient for longer distances since it uses more slow twitch muscle rather than fast twitch muscle (when you exert greater force you use more fast twitch, and with a higher cadence you can achieve the same power at a lower force than the same power at a slower cadence).

Hi Joan. Great write up, and very inspiring. I was at the 2013 myself doing my first ever ultra-distance ride in the 300 self-supported category so have some idea as to the weather you experienced. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around the suffering you must have experienced climbing Cedar Breaks after 350 miles of racing.... That said, I'm going to attempt the 500 this year :) I'm not nearly in the shape I hoped I'd be in, but your story has given me some inspiration to try. Signing up today. Question: what gearing do you use? I've always used a compact front with 11-28 back, but I really want a lower gears for Boulder mountain and Cedar Breaks. Was thinking of putting a 11-34 on the back. Any advice for an ultra-distance newbie? - Mark

Great story as usual Joan. I hope to see you out there in RAAM 2014. You will inspire me to keep going. Why are you even hesitating? If it is possible, then you should be doing it. Life is too short not to take the opportunity while it exists.
